Without Carl Macek, we wouldn't have even known to call it anime. Say what you will of his work after Robotech, he was a game-changer in our culture.

For me it's without Protoculture Addicts I wouldn't have known at that time to call Japanese cartoons japanimation or anime (but they didn't tell me how to pronounce it), I had seen Harmony Gold's Japanese cartoons in 1988 and went looking for the comics advertised in the end credits,
and without Robotech I wouldn't have Protoculture Addicts, and without Carl Macek, Harmony Gold may not have figured out how to get Robotech into syndication by combining 3 shows. I would never have seen it because I watched Harmony Gold's shows on a local UHF 24 hour station called The Cartoon Channel and not on NBC. Not finding out about anime until 3-5 years later would have changed my whole life. It was defining to my childhood and to me.

I just found out that Carl Macek passed today. I put my main response on Robotech.com's thread for Carl. I did forget to mention that it is because of Robotech that I became interested in Anime. It was a major gateway into the entire Anime and Japanese culture. First Robotech, then Macross, then Jpop because of Macross' music, and on ward. I'm really glad that he was able to live to see Robotech turn 25 and talked about it at that convention that was recorded. I'm happy that he got to talk about how Robotech was made indepth too. That has to be preserved for history. He basically said it himself that he's the reason that Harmony Gold and others changed their mind. "What? Impossible! There's no market for that!" Just like other industries and big shots saying "No one wants a computer at home on their desk! It would never sell." what nonsense
Here's what I wrote on RT.com, to share it here: "When I heard the news that Carl Macek died, I just had to scream "Nnooooooo." It's just disbelief when I just saw him in the recent videos taken from a Convention where Macek was speaking out about the 25 years of Robotech. I am so glad that Carl was able to share the story of how Robotech came about again and that people had the chance to record it. Carl Macek has given us so much as the visionary and creator of the Robotech Universe. He also had a major impact on the Anime industry of the United States. In his recent speech about how Robotech was made, it was Carl's wonderful ability to really envision ideas and concepts that others would say impossible. He thought about the future like many other legends in other industries. It is because of this, that Robotech could be created. I am going to truly miss Carl Macek. Robotech is still my most favorite cartoon of all time, and knowing that it's creator is gone hurts. Now when I think and see Robotech, I'll think of him first and then enjoy his creation. Thank you, Carl Macek! The Robotech Fans will never forget you!" http://www.robotech.com/news/viewarticle.php?id=418

I've already said some things on this matter, but I would like to also say, my heart goes out to his friends and family. |

I had the privilege of speaking to Mr Macek a few times on the internet over the years. I was really surprised by how friendly and erudite he was. He was a true pioneer in storytelling.
Rest in peace, Carl Macek. |

You wanna know something strange and coincidental? I was munching on a pineapple salad today while surfing the net, and I decided to google for any news on Robotech, to see if there were any new developments on the live-action movie. What came back were obituary articles on Carl Macek, who had passed away over the weekend.
Does anybody know the year and month that Roy Fokker died in the Robotech timeline? |

Here was a very moving tribute from song artist Michael Bradley - one of the most moving I've read yet!

If you go by the date cues in the series, you get two possible date ranges, depending if you go by the more current attempts to ramrod it into the Macross timeline, or if you go by what was the official timeline from 1985-2000.
Original Timeline (July 1, 2009 launch of SDF-1): Episodes 15 occurred around the end of July 2010, with the ship in the Northern Pacific, Rick getting shot down shortly afterward in the next episode. Rick's hospital stay would put Episode #18 in August, no later than early September, 2010. Current DYRL-based timeline (February 2009 launch, which ignores the fact that June 1, 2009 was the official start of Macross until DYRL retconned the February date, and while most other stuff from DYRL was later de-canonized for purposes of Seven, Plus, Zero, and Frontier, they kept the Feb date to fix an error in the original timeline vs. dialogue in Macross that didn't exist in Robotech, from the flight back from the fold being longer). Episode 15 took place around the end of February 2010, with the ship retconned into the South China Sea to keep Rick from dying instantly when he parachuted unconscious into the ocean while wearing a summer weight atmospheric uniform in Episode 16, putting Episode 18 in March or April 2010. The original Robotech RPG timeline had a number of errors based on the same timeline that was initially given to the writers McKinney, as they at the same time ALSO had the flight back to earth take 2 years in their chronology (based off one line of Narrator dialogue that the Narrator himself contradicts in the other episodes at the time, and the fact that Lisa states (IIRC) something like "twelve and a half months" in her report to the United Earth Defense Command at Alaska Base.
