I find in order to make some kind of fanwork for Robotech, I have to rewatch the series episodes every time. The secondary materials introduce so many brain bugs it's hard to focus on what Robotech is anymore. A lot of people don't understand that you could soup up Robotech and make it more advanced or "better" in some ways, but it wouldn't be Robotech.

Robotech can't be Macross. It can't be like some other show. Even changes like how Robotech II was, it was jarring. They changed the wrong things about the show to update it. Shadow Chronicles has a similar feel to Robotech II. They never learn. They still wanted to turn Robotech into that universe with a Robotech II feel to it.

To understand Robotech you really have to watch the episodes and reaffirm to yourself "This is what Robotech is like. This is what the characters act like. This is how they talk. This is what the music is like. This is how it's drawn. This is what every Robotech story is like, just like this". I wonder if most of these fans actually like the show still or are they liking what they think it could become more.

Robotech doesn't look very good next to some shows that have come out since then. Nevertheless, Robotech is best when it is itself, and that format would have to be kept in continuing it. If you think the original show looks like shit because it's old, you won't like the sequel. Doesn't matter how much CG there is, how much the camera sways back and forth, or if there are chorus singers in the soundtrack. The original show is basically a ripoff. It has some appealing aspects to it though that made people like it and if you take those out then there's nothing left good about it.

You don't see a total Robotech II/Shadow Chronicles reboot when they make a new Tenchi or Star Trek. They change the design but not the shows format. Tenchi is about accumulating the girls while defending them against the bad guy with your emerging power. Star Trek is the ship has run into some aliens that get into a conflict with the ship's crew. Transformers is about the Decepticons have come up with the new plan to acquire power at someone else's expense. These franchise shows have a format or formula.

Robotech is about a group of humans that slowly learn more about the alien enemy, each episode with some new angle on it, some of them fall in love with the enemy, toward the end trying to end the war and make peace.. you know, Robotech. You might think if you kept going with the same format in the sequel it would be boring, but that's not neccesarily true. The audience loves it. The show's format never gets old. Just ask trekkies or Macross fans. Macross still has the same plot they recycle over and over. It does not get old. You want to see it again and again.

Then what is up with the Haydonites? Isn't this Robotech? One of the Haydonites, a cute one, is supposed to fall in love with one of the humans. Also, toward the end, good and bad become uncertain and the group of main characters just try to make peace. At least that's how it would be if it was Robotech. Of course the audience would see it coming. They wouldn't care though. Suspension of disbelief. It only has to be consistant within the universe of Robotech.

The fans are usually unsure of how to make fanworks of Robotech or how to talk about Robotech. Harmony Gold doesn't often sell new stories that support the series itself. They sell stories that could never have been one of the 85 episodes and they don't sell them very often. The video games, the new animation, the novels, and the comics are examples of Robotech being out of character. Because there's just the 85 animated episodes of the type of Robotech that attacted the people in the first place, the show is too confusing to be a fan of. It's too hard to understand the Robotech universe because it switches format too often and that's a big part of why the fandom sucks.

Draw and write things in the general format of the animated episodes. Don't exclude hentai because it's part of an active fandom. Focus more on cute girls and romance to attract female fans. Invite those poeple from other forums when there's some reason for them to be here. That's all you can do.
