Major Posts: 777 (August 5, 2009 04:38 PM) Commander Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Has anyone heard anything about there being potential domestic release of the Macross Frontier OSTs? Way back in the mid-to-late '90s, we saw Victor release the Macross II soundtracks in the states, as well as most of the Macross Plus discs. Is there any chance of the same thing happening with Frontier? Or am I left with paying the $50+ for the import discs? I'm getting tired of youtubing whenever I want to hear the vocal tracks. Wouldn't this be something HGUSA would be interested in? I mean, there's already a built-in Macross Fanbase and they've shown willingness to market "Macross-only" merchandise before. EDIT: So, if one was going to import the discs... any suggestions as to where? I see play-asia.com has them, but I've never ordered from them before. Ideas? Suggestions? ~Pap. Zero is tricky. It's a small run of a relatively obscure prequel. Yes, anime fans love it (don't ask me why), but I'm not sure it would have the appeal to support a massive release. Frontier - maybe. It's a series-length sequel to a fairly popular franchise. It could find a home on SyFy or Cartoon Network. Maybe. What I don't get though is why HGUSA isn't interested. Robotech is, for the foreseeable future, dead for them (at least until the movie). Assuming the licensing fees aren't astronomical, why not get some MacF merchandise to sell? Would Robotech fans be willing to pick up Frontier soundtracks? ~Pap. Kote Darasuum

Note that I have worked as a dept. head on a convention that invited Itano as a guest, even aired, with Itano's permission, a fansub of the entire run of Zero with him sitting in the first row, and the two Macross experts that got him there (both of which worked on Streamline & Animeigo's Macross TV translations) were of the opinion "Say, what???" when someone told them of HG's claims. Had HG had any say on Zero (or later, Frontier), HG would have had to have signed off on its use at the con - and they weren't even in the decision loop, from what I understood. Which is, IMO, the most shining example of why HGUSA is forked when it comes to business practices. They have nothing to offer "for sale" these days; anything and everything related to TSC seems to be on hold until "after the movie." Given the way Hollywood so often works, that's just business suicide, IMO. There's no assurance that the film will ever go anywhere; it could be stuck in development hell long enough to bankrupt HG. If they were smart, they'd be begging Big West for the rights to release Frontier and Zero and related merchandise here in the states. That way they at least have something to sell. sigh ~Pap. Warner Brothers is. And when did HG ever assert that they had input into Macross Zero or Frontier? AFAIK, Harmony Gold and Big West have never had any business relationship whatsoever. All of the rights purchases in the 1980s involved Tatsunoko.

Warner Brothers is. I would tend to agree with Paploo concerning this, they have apparently put development of their (HG's) own projects on hold until WB releases the movie. They're now coasting along on the scattered products distributed by their licensees. Which appear to be pretty much more of what's already out there or revisions of what was put out before. Somewhat like the pre-RT.com days only now I suspect a lot of the die hard fans are burnt out or just don't care too much any more... the ones who kept Robotech alive all those years until HG realized the property still had marketability. So here's the catch, if the movie comes out soon and is a big hit they will likely have a windfall from the mass marketed tie-ins (something HG has not been able to do on their own -- probably because HG alienated themselves from the Japanese anime/toy companies and their US counterparts for so long); however, if the movie gets stalled for years as Hollywood movies often do the franchise could have little to no value left at that point as fan interest may have pretty much faded away to nothing. And what properties does HG have besides Robotech that have any significant market value? BTW, has HG ever said why they aren't moving forward with new projects and tie-in products in parallel to the movie's development and release? Could it be that interest in and value of their own Robotech projects was already taking a nose dive and they're waiting on the movie to revive it? More likely it was WB's who put HG on the sideline so they couldn't screw up the potential value of the rights they had just acquired... IIRC, Tommy's not involved with the movie even though he has apparently been very hands on with most if not all other RT projects since '99 to the point of allegedly killing a RT-TF comic crossover. This includes their assuming the payee rights for the Macross 2 RPG after US Renditions went under, and apparently taking ownership of remaining stocks of the 1980s and 1990s subs/dubs of Big West Macross products (DYRL, M2, maybe even Macross Plus), etc. when the licenses expired with Best Video, etc. They also used this as the basis for going after Yamato and their American distribution partner Toycom, when those companies planned to do a large-scale production and import of the Macross Plus mecha toys (that would have been at a price point 1/3 that of the Toynami VF-1s), that of course would have had zero relevence to a HG/Tatsunoko contract, to prevent that project (in fact, there was even talk that the Yamato/Toycom release had arranged a deal with Wal-Mart to take one shipment per store, had the product reached the US). They also have been known to go after importers of non-TV Macross items that Tatsunoko has no say over. I have been repeatedly raked over the coals for daring to suggest they DIDN'T have such contracts with BW/Macross Project, in the past, despite the evidence not supporting my attackers (while my evidence was ancedotal, but closer to the source from the Japanese side of things). Whether or not such a deal actually exists, HG tends to act as if they have it, and eventually, that is what matters if it ever reaches a court challenge over rights ownership. Fleet Admiral Posts: 2061 (August 22, 2009 08:30 AM) Fleet Admiral Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The thing about HG's claim to rights is they use it to block better and less expensive products from being released in the US while not negotiating those same releases themselves, instead putting out a few retooled RT products as Macross and Mosp. Personally, I think its because the big toy/anime companies won't do business with them. I suspect that if they had allowed Macross products into the US (and especially if they themselves had helped to promote them) by now we would see them in Walmart and likely other major retailers right beside the transformers. Warner Brothers is. Not bankrupting. Preventing growth? I thought it was fairly common knowledge and accepted wisdom that "Shadow Rising" was on hold until the movie. I think one of the Yune's said so, but I don't have the statement, as it was a while back. Without a new feature, HGUSA is left with, what? Niche products that do not sell outside of the fanbase (cups, mugs, etc). Repaints of repaints of repaints of toys that have been on the "shelves" for most of the decade. Role-playing games that cater to an even smaller market than the first printings. Re-releases of DVDs that were re-released already. Where is the room for growth? Where's the vision? What are they going to do in five years when, quite literally, they've run out of ideas to sell? Somewhat related to the subject of ToyCom / Yamato: I wonder whether we'll see the Robot Damashii VF-22 released here? Toynami has the rights to import that line, so I wonder whether HG will let them sell that particular toy (if they choose to bring it over)? ~Pap. Kote Darasuum

They import and export movies and TV shows. They did that before Robotech and they'll do that afterwards. The entire company's operations don't hinge on one product. All of those other things you mentioned (toys, DVDs, RPGs, etc.) are made by other companies who pay Harmony Gold for a Robotech license. If those companies don't do those things profitably, that's their problem. Either way, Harmony Gold gets paid. And Toynami recently confirmed that they will not be importing any of Bandai's Macross products. Bandai Japan and Big West could not come to an agreement, so it's not happening.
