Hey, heard a lot about Transformers 2's development. Heard that freakin' Wheelie and (obviously) Arcee are coming aboard. Why not right? Lots of other interesting casting, location shooting going around. A $320M domestic gross for the first film is going to be a pretty hard thing to beat. But since Robotech will be coming out in 2011/2012, I'm unsure how long this nostalgic trip is going to last.

Sony Pictures Animation has snapped up the rights for the blue characters from their Belgian owners and plans to produce a live-action/animated movie in a similar vein to 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Jordan Kerner will produce while David Stem and David Weiss, the men behind the screenplays for Shrek 2 and 3, are in talks to write the Smurf screenplay, according to Variety.

Created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, or Peyo, the beloved characters were first designed as minor characters for a series of comic books only to spawn a successful line of merchandise and novelty albums and a hit animated series.

Kerner told the magazine the plans were sparked by a holiday conversation with Michael Lynton, chairman-chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"He relished them as I do and suggested that it should be a live-action/CG film," he said. "[Studio boss] Amy [Pascal] felt equally that there was potentially a series of films in the making."

Columbia Pictures co-president Doug Belgrad added: "The Smurfs are one of the best-known franchises, and among the most beloved collection of characters in the world.

"We're very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the other smurftastic Smurfs in all of their 'three-apple-tall' glory.

Anyway, your rumor about G.I. Joe makes me think of... Austin Powers and Doctor Evil in the-movie-that-killed-the-series Goldmember. Dumbest fanfic ever. Will they really go that far to added "depth" to this character?


As for the Live action film losing the VF-1's "iconicity" (if it ever comes to that), it need not be a fixed-wing F22. This thing can easily go with a super-futuristic custom fighter. This is Warner Brothers. They can and WILL employ the greatest creative concept artists on the planet for this project. And who says the spoiled kids today (who will be older by 2011/2012) won't be accepting of this new breed of super cool transformable swing-wing Tomcat-wannabe? They'll probably think its the coolest thing since the Transformers movies. Maybe even cooler.

I've got some issues with how they'll deal with the loss of all Japanese sounding names. Like LISA HAYES and MINMAY. Sheesh. Rick Hunter is Rick Hunter, but what is he without the other two broads? Might as well get an all new cast. I did hear rumors that the film will be about "side characters", but with Lawrence Kasdan recently being hired as scriptwriter, I think we can kiss that odd idea goodbye. Might as well start an entirely new continuity, you know?

Seems Warner Brothers is really out to steal Transformers thunder with this one! Wow! Next thing you know, we'll have a freakin' cast by September and location shootings! This project is really washing the bland taste Shadow Chronicles left in my mouth.
