That's the link I followed - It's showing Frontier 1 now, but when I followed it before...
It had the exact same headers, comments, etc. - but showed some weird martial arts anime... Some kind of file glitch on the host, perhaps? |

I've watched Episodes #1-4 so far...
THIS is the new Macross??? OMG, it's otaku fanfiction with great graphics... My respect for 7 & Zero grows with each episode.... Let's see... The names appear to be deeply rooted in some anime otaku's wild fanfic dreams. I mean, I noticed the "Ranko" and "Saotome" (especially with Saotome's gender issues) bits a way back. Then, add in Klan Klan (OMG, it's a Zentraedi version of the same-named character from Outlaw Star, with her miclone version being the OS's super-deformed version), and that one officer seems to have some of Gene's scars; other names from popular anime from the last 20 years seem too obviously used... and VF-25 Messiah? I wouldn't use a name like that for a mech, except maybe a a comedic parody fic - but it also fits in well with the whole "someone's channeling the unwashed otaku" fanfic plot so far... And, my god, enough with the sendups of the original series - the whole Miss Macross, "my Boyfriends' a Pilot" and even a trip onstage (with a more realistic finish, at least). The characters getting stuck in a shelter, the whole "drag you into the cockpit while flying" and the chase leading up to it - all combined with schizophrenic openings from the first 4 episodes that can't seem to make up their mind WHICH Macross continuity (TV or DYRL) they are following, and in ways that seem to cause issues with even some sort of hybrid... It's a fun watch, I'll grant you that... but if you had given me SCRIPTS of the series without seeing episodes, I'd have insisted they'd had to have been someone's wacky fanfic, not the real thing.... |

Odd, I found the nods to the original kinda of cool.

One or two are "cool" - but after only 5 episodes they are already risking going overboard with it. The fact that there's a VB-6 in the series
isn't helping, either....
It's a fun series to watch, but I'm sure the people that were screaming "Thank God, a serious Macross series, after that Seven and Zero sillyness" before Frontier came out are sick to their stomachs. Especially when you factor in the gene-mod hippo/cow crossbreeds herded by Zentraedi farmers (which is actually somewhat logical, if you ask me; you'd want something with high-protein content, and be substantial for a Zentraedi meal - but truthfully the reason why cows are farmed and hippos aren't is because hippos take too long to reach maturity - they'd been better off with aurochs, using recovered DNA to recreate them). Then again, I actually grok Seven & Zero - and the fact that those two are intimately connected in ways that (last I heard) the creators won't fess up to. Any word yet as to when episodes #6 and later will start appearing subbed? |

Yeah, I want to see #6 & 7 from the other subber. The one for the #7 you just posted appeared to be unaware of 25 years of established Macross nomenclature
("New Union Army" instead of "New UN Army", etc.)
I noticed a few more things... 1. The one Zentran(?) cyborg we see appeared to have a ring similar to the gems in Sheryl's earrings; and when he messed with it, the Vajra came in. Similarly, Aldo and the mystery pilot HEARD Sheryl (presumably via the earring). This was no mere synching the combat to the music back on Frontier - those gems appear to actually be capable of realtime FTL communications - faster than even the fold communications being used, that were supposed to be experimental. Are we seeing another relic of the Protoculture in action, perhaps something that was cutting edge when it fell (given the comments on how the limits of the old and new human civilizations would be defined by fold technology's shortcomings in episode 6)? 2. The crack by the helmsman over the Lt's nausea was cute, but whether there's any accidental truth to it is a bit doubtful (though possible). A lot of people get sick after-action, after they "see the elephant" for the first time. 3. Something's up with Ranka. Was I the only one to notice something shifting underneath her dress in the scene before she yelled to Sheryl? And, that she continued to hold her stomach afterward, while singing? It would appear that she's been "exposed" to something, from earlier episodes. 4. Lastly... Our new mystery person and his mecha. It (And the ones we see with it) bear striking resemblence to those of the Varauta - right down to the markings. Specifically, the two different-sized, and linked, circles, seen behind the head in its Battroid mode, and just below and aft of the cockpit in its aircraft mode. Add in previous links (the Varauta of 7 and the Anti-UN of Zero shared other markings, perhaps because the scientific minds behind the anti-UN forces in Zero appeared to be the most knowledgable people on Earth of the Protoculture - until their deaths), and we start seeing a pattern. Perhaps those who were the acolytes of those that died in Zero, that managed to survive Boldolza, positioned themselves to be with the fleets that would get them closest to "things that Man was not meant to relearn". We see how disastrous it was for the 13th deep space fleet, in 7 - and how both the 35th & 37th fleets payed dearly for it in 2044-2046. Now, perhaps, 13 years later, the 21st & 25th fleets are facing yet another monstrous threat - that appears to monsters of Man's creation once more - or did you all not notice that when the "captive" Vajra heard the music, one could see a HUMAN shaped light in it. Just because the 7 ultimate bioweapon "Elves/Evil" were possessed by other-dimensional energy beings to become the Protodevlin, does not mean that there weren't lesser bioweapons being (or already) developed, in power between the Zentran and the Elves; in fact, logic would almost dictate it. If those fell into the wrong hands before, during or after the redemption of the surviving Protodevlin, one can only imagine the horrors that could be inflicted. After all, we have a pattern of anti-Culture forces already, using technology of Earth with "new" technology almost certainly recovered from the Protoculture. The power armors fought by Isamu in Plus; The mecha of the Varauta; mecha VERY similar to the Varauta's but SUPPOSEDLY unrelated, in the hands of terrorists and renegades in the various Macross games (that even now are being tied more and more into canon by the VB-6 in Frontier); now, the culmination of the pattern in Macross Frontier. Not only is there a new menace, they've got deep roots hidden within the human fleets already. As if Macross wasn't already riddled with concepts stolen from Illuminati conspiracy theory. Much as I saw Southern Cross parallels in Macross II, I am now seeing them in Frontier - and they are linking up with all previous Macross to produce a disturbing pattern. Are the Vajra purely weapons, or do they have a human component - and if so, was that component a willing volunteer? Were the casualties from years before KIA, or kidnaped for unspeakably dark purposes? If it was simply an alien attack, would there have been such a need to cover it up (consider the efforts made to hide this sort of abduction in SDC:SC and Macross 7). (one can also consider that, the way the Official chronology is going, it is becoming more and more possible for Macross II to be re-integrated into continuity in the future, with all the colony ships and worlds too far out, or too concerned for their own safety, to respond to the attack on Earth - even the Destroids we see on the Macross vessel of Frontier look to be a hybrid of Zero & II designs) |

Are they implying that Macross Quarter has a gerwalk? That bit where it transformed as it's going into combat - the ship used its thrusters in the same
manner that we've repeatedly seen Variable fighters use. If true and intentional, I love that idea.
Re: Ranka: I think it's fairly obvious that there's something up with her, especially given the way the Varja reacted to her presence earlier in the series. I'm thinking that Ozama Lee's story was a little... intentionally vague? Although, from the get-go, I've suspected that she actually is a humanoid Varja.... Is it possible that Mystery Man is controlling his mecha through his space harmonica? That would be all kinds of hilariously awesome if true. Bas: Don't even get my hopes on seeing MacII reconciled into the main chronology. ^_^ ~Pap. (Macross Frontier is a giant robot sexplosion. Yeah, I said it.) |

After seeing Episode 8, subbed (including the trailer for 9)...
Anyone who dares bash Macross 7 for silly antics and comedic elements while praising Frontier has either NEVER SEEN 7 (and is going by word of mouth), or is a hypocritical asshole. Macross Frontier has now gone full-bore into the anime cliche zone.... At least a number of 7's silly things had logical basis (i.e. the Jamming Birds being an attempt to force the ability that came to Basara & Mylene had naturally - and failing). But, having BOTH Ranka & Sheryl enroll in Alto's school? (the less said about the exoskeleton & the chase of Sheryl's panties, the better - on no, I've said too much) (goes off to lose his religion....) |

I suddenly see the Japanese looking at us Yankee grown-ups like Dr. Frankenfurter looked at Janet after her appraisal of Rocky:
"I didn't make him for YOU." When will we get it into our skulls that we're not the target audience anymore--if we ever were!--and adjust our outlook accordingly? |

And, how will you react if Frontier continues to get more and more campy as it goes on? |
